Don’t stop (unless your life depends on it)
I’m being driven to the yard right now, clicking away on my laptop. It’s not so much because I have a big desire to share my thoughts right now, but rather, I have found that writing, particularly while in the car, gets my mind off what’s happening outside of the car. I only pay attention when, for some reason, the driver slams the brakes, and this happens so often that I am not even paying attention to that anymore… you see, the driving philosophy here is “ don’t stop”. So, instead of patiently waiting for the car in front to complete it’s turn, you simply contour it, left/right – doesn’t matter, because the other car you have just cut-off will move over the bicycle lane…the bike moves over a bit – , may slow down,, but only if in real life threatening danger… You’re going straight and another car is turning into your lane? He doesn’t stop, you just move over to give him room to turn into your lane. The fact that this means that you are driving in the left lane with on-coming traffic coming your way isn’t a problem…because they will move over and make some room…Quite civilized isn’t it? Nice when you’re in a Volvo, not so nice when you’re a pedestrian crossing the street…remind me to read my life insurance policy…
